BotoxBOTOX® is natural purified protein.

BOTOX® is Botulinum toxin type A which is a neurotoxin protein produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. It is one of the most poisonous naturally occurring substances, and it is the most toxic protein. Though it is highly toxic, it is used in minute doses both to treat painful muscle spasms, and as a cosmetic treatment in some parts of the world. It is sold commercially under the brand names BOTOX, DYSPORT and MYOBLOC for this purpose. The term Botox, Dysport, and Myobloc and trade names and are not used generically to describe the neurotoxins produced by C. botulinum.

BOTOX® treatment is a popular treatment that is used to immobilize the facial muscles that cause wrinkles. It is also effective for relaxing muscles in the jaw that cause some of the most common symptoms of TMD, including clenching and grinding of the teeth.

The FDA recommends the usage of Botox of ages 18-65.

Containdication and Side Effects

Botox injections work by weakening or paralyzing certain muscles or by blocking certain nerves. The effects last about three to four months. Side effects can include pain at the injection site, flu-like symptoms, headache and upset stomach. Injections in the face may also cause temporary drooping eyelids.

Do not use botulinum toxin type A without first talking to your doctor if you have a neuromuscular disorder such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), myasthenia gravis, Lambert-Eaton syndrome, and others; or an infection at the intended site of injection.

Botulinum toxin type A is in the FDA pregnancy category C. This means that it is not known whether it will be harmful to an unborn baby. Do not use botulinum toxin type A without first talking to your doctor if you are pregnant or could become pregnant during treatment.

The FDA recommends pregnant or breast feeding women not receive Botox treatments.
